Texas Chainsaw Manicure at Down Home Ranch

The Chainsaw Manicure is a joint effort between the US Forest Service and DHR to create a defensible barrier around buildings and dwellings. This protects the ranch against forest fires.

The Bastrop fire over Labor Day Weekend in 2011 was a grim reminder of just how important this work is for the ranch. The worst fire disaster in the state’s history consumed more than 1,500 homes and 34,000 acres just a few miles south of us. Everyone on the Ranch has friends and family who have been directly affected by these fires.

This projects needs people to swamp logs and debris from the sites to the road and load/unload trailers with debris. The ranch will provide lunch. If you can bring a chainsaw, be sure to arrive in time for the 8:00am clinic on chainsaw safety.

If you are so inclined, you are welcome to come join Troop 165 and camp out with us Friday night. We’ll be tenting on the grounds. Restrooms and showers are available. Anyone who comes to spend the night, I will prepare breakfast tacos the next morning.

Down Home Ranch is a community for Downs Syndrome adults to live and thrive where people understand and service their needs while allow ranchers to live in a full life of work and recreation on the ranch. Read their story here: http://www.downhomeranch.org/story.shtml
